For Californians in Los Angeles County Waiting on Justice, New Legislation Offers a Faster Path Forward
AB 1950 by Assemblymember John Harabedian advances to help modernize the civil justice system and reduce unnecessary delays.
(SACRAMENTO, CA) – For Californians in Los Angeles County caught in long legal battles, waiting for a resolution can mean months or even years of uncertainty. Families trying to move forward, small businesses facing disputes, and individuals seeking closure can find themselves stuck in a court system that is overwhelmed and delayed.
A new effort to improve California’s civil justice system moved forward as AB 1950 (Harabedian) passed the Senate Floor, advancing legislation that will help courts resolve disputes more efficiently by expanding access to court ordered mediation in Los Angeles County.
“Too many people get stuck waiting for a resolution when they should be able to move on with their lives,” said Assemblymember John Harabedian (D-Pasadena). “Our courts need every tool available to help people resolve disputes fairly and efficiently. AB 1950 is a path toward a justice system that works better for everyone.”
"By passing the Senate, AB 1950 is one step closer to making our justice system worthy of the people it serves. One where access to resolution is not a privilege of means, but a promise kept to every resident of Los Angeles County," said Presiding Judge Sergio Tapia. "This bill gives our civil bench the flexibility to route cases toward established mediation programs where settlement negotiations can succeed and helps litigants find resolution sooner without ever forfeiting their right to a timely trial. We are deeply grateful to Assemblymember Harabedian for his vision in authoring this bill, and to the members of the California Senate for recognizing what it means for the people we serve."
Court delays affect real people. When cases take longer to resolve, families can face continued uncertainty, businesses can struggle with unresolved issues, and individuals can be left in limbo.
AB 1950 now heads to the Governors desk for consideration.
