Legislature Sends Budget to Governor Newsom, Assemblymember Harabedian Responds
(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Today, Assemblymember John Harabedian (D–Pasadena) and the California Legislature passed the 2026-2027 Assembly-Senate budget agreement, and Assembly Member Harabedian responded:
“While Trump’s ‘Big Ugly Bill’ threatens to gut our social safety net by kicking millions off of their health care coverage and food assistance, our budget protects healthcare and rejects service cuts to our most vulnerable communities,” said Assemblymember John Harabedian (D-Pasadena). “We will continue to fight to protect the most urgent needs of Californians and push for resources to support our recovery from the Eaton Fire.”
The proposed budget protects healthcare, education funding, and makes critical investments in housing, public safety, and climate resilience with the following:
- Rejects the proposed $2,000 asset limit on Medi-Cal recipients
- Delays immediate Medi-Cal dental cuts by 12 months
- Adds $40 million to protect reproductive health care
- Increases special education funding by $2.4 billion ongoing
- Allocates $15 million ongoing in Missing and Murdered Indigenous People grants
- Provides $500 million for low-income housing programs
- Provides $900 million to the Homeless Housing, Assistance, and Prevention program to combat street homelessness
- Rejects cuts to in-home supportive services (IHHS), protecting seniors and people with disabilities
- Provides $200 million to the Multifamily Housing Program
- Provides $80 million more than the Governor proposed in directed spending for immigration legal services
- Allocates $108 million to keep food banks stocked
The budget bill now heads to Governor Newsom’s desk to be signed by June 29th.
