Assembly Passes Bipartisan Mortgage Relief Bill for LA Wildfire Survivors
(SACRAMENTO, CA) – The California State Assembly passed AB 1847, authored by Assemblymember John Harabedian (D-Pasadena), legislation designed to extend critical mortgage forbearance protections for homeowners impacted by the Eaton and Palisades wildfires. The bill advanced off the Assembly Floor with bipartisan support and the backing of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, who joined as official sponsors.
More than a year after the devastating Eaton and Palisades wildfires, thousands of families remain displaced as rebuilding efforts continue to face significant delays caused by insurance disputes, rising construction costs, labor shortages, and ongoing financial uncertainty. For many homeowners, continuing to pay mortgages on damaged or uninhabitable homes has created overwhelming financial strain while recovery remains far from complete. AB 1847 would extend mortgage forbearance protections for an additional two years, helping families avoid foreclosure and remain financially stable as they rebuild.
“Today’s vote sends a clear message that California stands with wildfire survivors,” said Assemblymember Harabedian (D-Pasadena). “Families impacted by the Eaton and Palisades fires are still fighting every day to recover, and they should not lose their homes because rebuilding has taken longer than anyone expected. I’m grateful to Mayor Bass and Supervisor Barger for their partnership and leadership in helping move this critical relief forward.”
“So many wildfire survivors continue to face ongoing mortgage payments and insurance denials that are making it impossible to rebuild,” said Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. “We need the big banks and the insurance companies to step up and do what’s right so wildfire survivors can rebuild. Supervisor Barger and I have been fighting for this here at home, in Sacramento, and in Washington, and I thank Assemblymember Harabedian for introducing this legislation and listening to survivors.”
"I appreciate Assemblymember Harabedian championing AB 1847 and for understanding what wildfire survivors in our communities truly need," said Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger. "Extending mortgage forbearance is the right thing to do. Our families are fighting every single day to hold on to what little stability they have left, and they deserve every measure of relief available to them. We must do right by wildfire survivors. This bill is an important step toward helping them hang on to hope and rebuild with dignity."
AB 1847 now heads to the Senate for consideration.
