Assembly Passes Asm. Harabedian’s Bill to Expand Affordable Housing Across California
(SACRAMENTO, CA) - Today Assemblymember John Harabedian (D-Pasadena) passed AB 2058 off the Assembly Floor. This bill reduces redundant local inspections for factory-built housing, advancing access to more affordable housing statewide. AB 2058 now advances to the State Senate.
As housing costs continue pushing working families, young adults, and longtime residents out of California, the state must find faster and more affordable ways to build homes. Factory built housing allows homes to be constructed efficiently and installed onsite, reducing construction time and lowering cost. Current law creates unnecessary delays and added expenses through duplicate inspections and permitting requirements that slow projects and drive prices up.
“California cannot afford to make building housing so difficult and expensive,” said Assemblymember John Harabedian (D-Pasadena). “Families are struggling to stay in the communities they grew up in, and young people are wondering if homeownership will ever be within reach. AB 2058 cuts the unnecessary delays that drive up costs and slow construction so we can build more housing faster and give Californians a fair shot at stability.”
AB 2058 is supported by Abundant Housing Los Angeles, California Council for Affordable Housing, California Housing Consortium, and other housing stakeholders committed to the advancement of affordable housing.
AB 2058 will be heard in the California State Senate policy committees in June.
