Empowering Residents and Preserving Affordability: Asm. Harabedian’s Social Housing Strategy and Implementation Program Bill Advances Out of Assembly Housing Committee
(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Today, in a successful effort to preserve and expand affordable housing statewide, Assemblymember John Harabedian (D-Pasadena) announced that AB 2094, which would establish a social housing coordinator to lead social housing strategy and implementation, has passed the Assembly Committee on Housing and Community Development.
Over half of Californians rent their living spaces, over one million Californian households are behind on rent, and housing prices are one of the top reasons Californians leave the state. AB 2094 increases the possibility to develop mixed-income housing and stabilize housing costs by requiring the Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) to establish a social housing coordinator to spearhead social housing strategy.
“Social housing represents a new model that will alleviate the burden of unaffordable rent on our communities statewide. By increasing stable, accessible, and affordable housing constructed by the state, we will champion community stability and economic mobility where the private market has failed,” said Assemblymember Harabedian (D-Pasadena). “It is our moral imperative to reduce the displacement, inequality, and insecurity our communities face by spearheading innovative housing solutions to our perennial housing crisis. AB 2094 brings us one step closer to that stability.”
AB 2094 reduces the social and economic consequences of housing unaffordability and insecurity, while ensuring that individuals do not have to choose between housing and other necessities.
